Heat pump vs furnace in a cold climate
A cold-climate heat pump provides heating and cooling from one outdoor system and can be efficient through much of the shoulder season. A furnace produces heat by burning fuel and remains familiar in very low temperatures. The better fit depends on insulation, electrical service, fuel prices, backup strategy, noise tolerance, and the home's ductwork. Heat pumps need careful low-temperature design and controls; a furnace and AC combination may be simpler when replacement timing or budget is tight. Ask for the design temperature, expected balance point, backup heat plan, and a load calculation. A clear proposal should show operating assumptions rather than promising one system always wins.
