AC frozen coil: why it happens and what to do

Turn the cooling system off and set the thermostat fan to on if the blower is working. Put towels near the indoor coil or drain area and allow the ice to melt naturally. Do not chip at the coil or use a heat gun. Ice usually forms because airflow is too low, the filter is blocked, the evaporator is dirty, or refrigerant is low from a leak. Once thawed, the system needs a diagnosis rather than a quick recharge. Running an iced coil can damage the compressor and send water into places it should not go. Note whether the problem followed a filter change, a hot day, or a recent repair.
